RIBA East Great British Buildings Tour – St. Albans Museum and Gallery

The depth and significance of this building has been rediscovered through the conservation work by John McAslan + Partners, which has found a perfect balance between the past and the present. Winner of an RIBA East Regional Award, an RIBA Conservation Award and RIBA National Award 2019.

As part of this series of events showcasing 2019's Award winners, John McAslan Architects are giving a tour of St Albans Museum and Gallery, St Albans.

This tour will lead you to discover a magnificent first floor ballroom, with windows looking out over the shops and market stalls, an old octagonal Magistrates’ Court which has been sensitively restored and is now a café, where you can sit in the Judge’s seat or stand in the dock. Brick arch cells below the court have been turned into modern toilets, where closing the door on the cubicle provocatively places you in a tiny cell.

The Awards Jury commented: "The architects set to work on much more than simple conservation of the fabric. They wanted to re-find the civic significance of the structure and adapt its purpose to serve the modern city. ‘’

This event is part of our Great British Buildings series of talks and tours around the country.
